Our History

Our history dates back to 1912 when James McKeen Cattell, Ph.D., established the Psychological Corporation in New York City. Dr. Cattell was a former president of the American Psychological Association, the first psychologist elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and founder and editor of the Scientific Monthly.

Together with Robert Sessions Woodworth and Edward Lee Thorndike, two of Dr. Cattell's former graduate students, he started a business to market psychological tests and related materials to educational, corporate and government clients. Both Woodworth and Thorndike were eminent psychologists and Thorndike was regarded as the foremost authority on the analysis and measurement of learning.

Dr. Cattell's plans to create a holding company and referral service for psychologists were a success. He was able to recruit almost half of the 400 members of the American Psychological Association at that time, for his corporation. He gave shares of stock to psychologists who worked for his corporation, in exchange for their willingness to administer intelligence tests and promote applied psychology through research activities. Offices for his corporation were opened in New York with plans for expanding throughout the United States of America and abroad.

Dr. Cattell served as president of The Psychological Corporation until late 1926, when he was named Chairman of the Board and replaced as president by Walter Van Dyke Bingham, a psychologist with more than 10 years of experience in industrial psychology.

The Wechsler Series

In 1939, the company published the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scales. David Wechsler was a former student of Woodworth at Columbia University. He first developed the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) in 1939 which was then called the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Test. From this, he derived the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) in 1949 and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) in 1967. The company's Wechsler intelligence tests continue to be industry leaders today.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In 1970, the Psychological Corporation was purchased by Harcourt Brace & World (later known as Harcourt Brace Jovanovich). Harcourt Brace & World was formed from the merger of two other growing textbook and educational test publishing companies, Harcourt Brace & Company and World Book Company in 1960. Harcourt Brace & World merged the HB&W test educational testing division into the newly acquired Psychological Corporation.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Psychological Corporation expanded through a series of acquisitions. It acquired the Merrill Publishing Company Test Division (1986), Cognitronics Corporation (1993), Communication Skill Builders/Therapy Skill Builders (1994), and Assessment Systems, Inc. (1995).

The Psychological Corporation was the clinical division of Harcourt Assessment, which also had an education division called Harcourt Educational Measurement.

In 2003, the above two divisions were united into one operating company. The company name was officially changed to Harcourt Assessment, Inc. However, Harcourt Assessment retained "PsychCorp" as a brand imprint for select products.
